I decided to give Huntington Reservoir (Mammoth) my first try for the year. I know the ice has been gone for some time now but I have never done very well for the first few weeks after ice out. I got there at 7:00 and fished until 3:00 out of my tube. The water level is at 81% and I doubt it will be going up much more by the looks of the remaining snowpack. I fished the middle portion of the reservoir using a fast sinking (#7) line and size 6-8 bead head woolly buggers and leeches. I managed to pick up a few fish, all tigers, ranging from 14" to 19" long. The water temperature was 59-61 degrees and the visibility in the water of about 6'. Most of the fish were hooked near the bottom in 15' to 30' FOW. I don't know what it is about tiger trout but I cannot keep them hooked. I always miss way more than what shows up in the net.[:/]
It was a fun day on the water and at just over 9,000' elevation, very comfortable fishing.[
