Otter Creek Advice?
#1
Hi All,

I am headed down to Otter Creek for several days with the family and extended family this week. I only make it to Otter Creek about once a year and am looking for some advice from those who know the lake better than I do.

My in-laws typically fish from shore with bait and do well there, however, I prefer to fish from a tube or from our aluminum fishing boat. I have downriggers for trolling and a selection of flies, lures and jigs that we typically use at Strawberry, Deer Creek, Flaming Gorge, etc.

Will be practicing catch and release whenever possible and would appreciate any insight you can share on best lures to use, methods that work, locations on the lake to try, speed/depth, etc., etc.

Any advice or recent reports would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I've done really well recently trolling pop gear. I found most of the fish about 10 feet down. There is a channel about 40% across the reservoir which holds the deepest water and where most of the fish can be found.
From the bank, rainbow power bait and anything with extra sent seemed to do the trick. Action was a lot slower from the bank.

Thanks Channelcatdan - I appreciate the help.

Do you use a worm behind the pop gear? Or something else?

Yep, I used a worm on a wedding ring most of the time. I broke one of the only wedding rings I had and replaced it with a Mepps spinner and a worm. The spinner seemed to work just as well.

Just reporting back on the trip last weekend . . . we trolled early and late with good success for rainbows from 12 to 20 inches.

In the early morning, we did best long lining a gold Jakes or a dodger with a wooley bugger behind it. As the sun got higher we used down riggers with a variety of lures from 15 to 25 feet down. A silver and blue spoon was the most consistent producer.

My in-laws fished with powerbait and minnows from shore and did well too. Their biggest tipped the scale at just over 5 lbs.

Good times.
