Have plans for myself and 2 oldest sons for a day trip to Hyrum on 2 August. Have not been there in 2 years. Anything new I should be aware of? Not looking to keep any fish, just want a day up in cooler climate and do some catch and release.

Troll along the south shoreline. Bring a slingshot for the b-hole water skiers that feel the need to buzz you! (Middle age is making me cranky I guess)
I fished it on Monday with my uncle from about 1-5 and we caught 5 that were between 13-15" trolling wedding rings tipped with worm about 10-20' deep. Kinda slow, but as I kinda hinted...we were being buzzed by inconsiderate skiers (some as close as 50' from us!) so it was kinda noisey and wavy. Plus, it was during the cold front and the temp only got up to 70.
Saw a guy and his buddy on the south shoreline by the dam that had what looked like limits of decent sized trout. We only caught one perch and no bass......just trout. The trout had good pink meat and tasted delicious for dinner last night!

This one made me laugh. In the early eighties, I was in the military and came home on leave. My old man took me fishing at Deep Creek. Before he put the boat in the water he gathered up a bucket of rocks to throw at the jet skiers. Everytime I put my boat in the water, I think about the old fart. Guess I still miss him.

Fished there on Sunday with the wife and kids. We fished from about 8:30 to 10:30 in the morning. Caught 8 between 17 and 21 inches. For trout stick to the edges from swim beach to the dam then around to the south beach, head east to the point cut across to big toe and do it again. Squid tipped with gulp maggots behind a dodger off the downrigger and Berkley flicker shad seemed to be bringing in some good sized trout. Trolled about 2 mph. If your more of a bass guy, hit the weeds and trees on the east side, pitching a wacky rigged senko has been pretty good. East side is easily accessible with current water levels and should stay that way for your trip. If your fishing from shore I can't help with much info but I would say follow the crowd in the southwest corner. Good luck.

Mike, thanks for the info. We used to camp at Hyrum the first weekend of August each year cause both oldest boys birthdays are near that time (one the 31st July, one 5th Aug) but they are both married now and working schedules that have them both working on weekends but off on Tues. So just going up for the day, drag some lines around up there for trout, maybe park in one of the spots we usually get some perch action. No plans to keep anything. Just some cooler weather (hopefully) without the Willard Bugs [sly] [fishin]

Sling shots....had not thought of that. We are all CCW guys, but when we are on the boat I make the boys lock their side arms up. Less temptation to put holes in some ski boat water line............[:/]
Although, I sometimes keep a heavy egg weight rigged up on the end of my back up trolling rod that has about 250 ft. of 12 lb. mono. Have been known to bounce it off a couple big boats transoms that run too close to me when I'm anchored. Gets the point across with out injury or major damage.

Haha,
I keep a heavy crocodile spoon rigged up on a spare pole. I can cast it 130' (measured it out of curiosity in the back yard). If a boat is close enough to let me hit it with that lure then I feel good about letting fly with it and if it bounces off a hull or snags the boat then I KNOW he was too close.
And just in case the mad max boater wants to poke me in the nose for it I keep my spare oar handy......he can't touch me without boarding and I suppose that would be difficult when I'm armed with a paddle and have the "high ground"![laugh]
