Dead Fish At Utah Lake
#1
I've been reading that no one has seen any dead fish on Utah Lake yet because of our algae. Well I was down at Timp Marina Friday (7-29-16) at AF boat harbor and there was dead fish lining the shore as far as I could see towards Lindon. I could see birds eating them and plenty of critter tracks. I couldn't tell exactly what type of fish they were but a few were Cats. Thought you may want to know

You weren't able to get any pics ?? Were they visible from AF harbor or would you have to be on the south dike at Timp ?? I may run down in the morning to see what can be seen !! Might have to go into Lindon harbor on the north dike to get at good view.

I have been watching the south end of the lake -- Lincoln around to Genola and I have not seen any dead fish. The carp are active and the water is losing some of its brown coloration. I'm still hoping for the best but no observable fish die-off as of today.

Maybe the toxins are slow to kill or maybe the fish have a way of surviving the worst of the bloom?? Time will tell.

Cautious optimism.

UPDAATE: Went down to AF harbor this afternoon to check on the possibility of a fish kill. I also attempted to get down to the lake at a couple of other points to the East toward Lindon Harbor, but no go. I did not have time to go down to Lindon.

RESULT: There was a small kill, most likely 4-5 days ago. The bay just north of the AF Harbor, where the AF river runs in has several dozen dead fish, they looked mostly like carp. Gulls and Black Ibis were feeding on the carcasses. Note on the lake level, that area to the north of the marina is dry for about 50-75 yds from the normal shoreline and is very shallow out another 50 yds or so ( it is shallow when gulls can walk, not swim !!)

South and East of the harbor, the big sweeping shoreline, had several dozen dead fish down to the east as far as I could see with binoculars . Again, lots of gulls and ibis feeding on the carcasses.

So there has been a small fish kill already, BUT !! looking out into the lake, there were large patches of bright green still floating around out there. Since our prevailing winds are from the South West, it makes sense that these floating rafts of algae would be found on the North East portion of the lake.

So we have had a small kill, but there is still a lot of algae out there yet to die !!!
