Flaming Gorge Kokes
#1
I was at Flaming Gorge most of this week
was thinking of a new way to catch big lakers
this is what I did Tue at Lucerne
put on a 5" Rapala Scatter Rap Deep Husky Jerk
then 5 feet above that used a Tangle Free 3-Way Swivel
with a longer leader than I had on the rapala and added a spoon
tryed to let the rapala drag the bottom and the spoon be 5' off the bottom, did not work we only got one 28" laker
lots of lakers on the fishfinder
talked to a Fishing Guide and he said he had a hard time gitting them to bite
my luck to much wind to fish for them at 4 PM. that night.
fished buckboard Wed for kokes did real good
I put all the red ones back but the two here. some we put back were bigger
I saw others puting them back also.

We went to Breeze Hill two days. Lots of Kokes on the finder. Many schools of fish. The most I have ever seen at the gorge. Friday was good. Caught many nice red and silver fish. Some very big fish too.

We then trolled Linwood for Lakers and had fun. I had never used rapalas to troll deep and we had a blast. Thursday afternoon, no wind, calm and many lakers on the finder from 60 to 90 feet. We targeted the 60 footers and caught 8 or 9 at 4-5 lbs. Very good eating.

Saturday was very frustrating. After zeroing in on what they wanted Friday we were expecting a banner day Saturday at Breeze Hill. We only kept 4 fish for the 4 of us. Tons of fish and no bites. Many boats and no one was catching. Very few caught by other boats as well. Go figure. For some reason, they shut down. We tried every color, stacking, every depth. No go.

Most of our fish were caught on Friday at the 60 to 65 depth. Some on lead line at 30 and a few at 45. By far the majority were at 60-65.

Thanks for your help. Did not see you there but we had about 20 boats around us. We checked out Lowe's Canyon. No fish. No boats. Not sure why someone said Lowe was great. Oh well. We had plenty of fish to play with at Breeze Hill but they did not want to play with us on Saturday.

Pearl squid was the winner. Better than double pink or orange. Large silver dodgers. I even bought your juice to put on the pink maggots. Worked great on Friday.

So when they start to turn red how do you determine which ones are still worth eating?

I determined that if they fight well and seem very energetic then the flesh is still firm and good. I filleted and ate some pretty red fish and it was just as good as a silver koke. I think they are a week or two away from disintegrating. Just my opinion based on how the meat felt and tasted.

While dragging the bottom with the weight that you showed us do you ever have a problem with the weight rolling around and getting the lines tangled up?

Great looking Kokes.

to many boats in one area, causes the kokes to get lock jaw. I refuse to play bumper boats, that why I always fish the outsides of the pack. Many times I will wait until the pack has moved off, then I will move in, and start catching fish. I do this all the time at the gorge.

Very interesting. That thought crossed my mind when I counted more than 20 boats around us. Too many squid and lures the kokes get tired of see them and chasing. They just shut down. That makes sense to me.
Thanks for the insight KokeKing.

I also think they can sense the sonar, lots of boats lots of sonar seems to turn them off. No science just my thoughts.
