Trailer Axel Question
#1
Okay I know this belongs in another section, but can you leave it here long enough so it's seen? I just have a quick question... I have a trailer to haul my sled to Cascade and the wheels don't have bearing buddies on it now, but I want to put some on. Can I just pop out the caps and put the bearing buddies in place and then apply grease through the BB's or do I have to repack the bearings first and then put the BB's in to keep grease there for furture needs??? Also do you have to do anything different with seals if you use BB's??? Thanks for the help... J

If your bearings haven't been repacked in a while or if they have some slop in them it would be a good idea to clean them out, repack, and torque the nut back to spec. There's no need to do so before or during the install of your bearing buddies though. Having the buddies on there will help ensure you have grease in there at all times, and prevent water from getting in, but it won't magically clean out and adjust your bearings for you. The buddies are great to have, especially on boat trailers. Make sure when you load them up with grease you don't overfill them. Pump just until you see the piston move a little bit. If you fill them to the max it will put too much pressure on the seals. Good luck and be sure to post a report of your Cascade trip!

Hey thank you so much for the great tips. I haven't put many miles on this trailer, but has been over 5 years since I did any bearing maintenance so I better repack them. Thanks and I will report back. Later J

If you are in a hurry and are kind of lazy (like me), then just pull off the old moon caps and pop on the bearing buddies. You will probably be just fine. However, if you want to do everything just right (like me), then you should probably remove, clean, and re-pack the bearings ... like what El_Matador said.

Thanks Coot, got the cap off and the grease looks really good, I'm not near as worried as I was, I guess low use is good on trailer axels. The grease was still clear and looking new and hasn't started to separate at all. So I think a repack and I should be ready to go. Thank you. Later J
