Our energy problems, and therefor our dependence on Middle Eastern oil, would be gone if we devoted more money and time to finding alternatives than taking it from other countries.
As for stability in the Middle East, I think we should of made Afghanistan our "base of operations". Yes, I know I'm not in the military or in a position of authority to make these calls, but I just feel like we would be able to handle countries like Iran and Iraq if we weren't stretched so thin. Just think - if we hadn't of jumped the gun on Iraq, we might've been able to have Iraq as an alley against a much greater threat - Iran. Sure, Saddam might of hated the US, but he hated Iran much, much more. I could be wrong though.
